Ever wondered how petroleum is produced? 51-year-old Ibrahim Bin Hussein did. This fascination led him to pursue a diploma in Chemical Process Technology at Singapore Polytechnic. Upon graduating, Ibrahim set foot in the chemicals industry and never looked back. He soon landed a role as a Technician at Lucite International, which kickstarted his 11-year journey with the global acrylic manufacturer.
Ibrahim’s most memorable experience was a trip to the UK in 2008 to train for the upcoming go-live of the company’s first Alpha 1 Methyl methacrylate (MMA) manufacturing plant in Singapore. Ibrahim and his colleagues were given the opportunity to learn from their British counterparts and practise in a pilot plant. Their hard work soon paid off as Alpha 1 hit production targets within just a few weeks of operations.
Mentoring the next generation of technicians
Inspired by the success of Alpha 1, Ibrahim volunteered for Alpha 2’s commissioning in Saudi Arabia in 2017. During the one-year deployment, he was given the opportunity to train and share his expertise with a team of junior technicians. Seeing his juniors grow and progress in their roles gave Ibrahim a deep sense of fulfilment and the impetus to continue mentoring.
Today, mentoring fresh graduates and new joiners have become part and parcel of Ibrahim’s role as a senior operations technician. Apart from guiding on the know-how of safety operations, he also makes it a point to get to know them over lunch and during breaks. Building a strong team and working together as one is something Ibrahim constantly emphasises as a core pillar of Lucite International’s company culture.
A close-knit community
In the 72-strong company, co-workers treat each other like family. Opportunities like Family Day events at Universal Studios Singapore allow the team to unwind and get together outside of work. When asked about his favourite part of the job, Ibrahim highlighted the friendships forged and the sense of camaraderie in the team.
As Ibrahim sums up, “Lucite International is truly my second home. A few of us have been here for 11 years and I am so proud that we've been able to both realise our potential as individuals and grow as a team at this company.”
